General Produce

Recently I blogged about the amazing farmer's market that goes on every Sunday in downtown Sacramento. But what about those breed of folk who are just too busy to make it during those brief hours? Well, General Produce might be your solution!

I discovered General Produce by accident as I drove down the street from my job and noticed the very large sign. Since produce was on my mind, I decided to take a gander inside and was pleasantly surprised! General Produce has been around since the early 1900s and they specialize in obtaining locally grown and organic produce, distributing them to restaurants, grocery stores, and other large food chains. But they also have a special program not known to most locals, they sell produce to individual households as well!

You can basically handle your order in two ways; you can go in person and fill out an order form, indicating how much of each product you want, or you can call ahead of time and speak to a receptionist who will fill out and process the form for you. Both ways are very efficient and the products are amazing! They have every possible type of produce you can imagine, and of course the prices are extremely competitive.

When I arrived, I had a very helpful worker go through the selection process with me as I picked out how much of each item I wanted. He then proceeded to take 15 minutes in gathering all of my products and helped my carry it to my car! Now, the only downfall is that all the items have been previously packed and are sold in bundle amounts. But not to despair, these bundles are usually the same sizes you would purchase individually at any grocery chain!

I ended up taking home 3 crates full of a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables that lasted over 2 weeks! So bargain hunters and nutrition conscientious people be aware! You can still get fresh, quality produce at amazing prices even if your unable to attend any farmer's markets. How about them apples?

Sacramento Farmer's Market

Sacramento Farmer's Market
8th and W St.; Under the Freeways

Sunday mornings

Fresh cut flowers, hand picked fruits and vegetables, and array of shellfish, fresh bread, and other remarkable items can be found at the remarkable sunday farmer's market in downtown Sacramento. Located on 8th and W St. under the freeway overpass, this market really is a gem, not only for people on a budget, but those with palpable pallets as well.

I have always loved bargain hunting, especially when it comes to quality produce. Being somewhat new to the Sacramento region, I've been really eager to find a great market that sold a variety of quality products and at a low cost. Several times from different sources I was told to check out the sunday market but never got around to it. Then finally I found the time, and boy was it worth it!

I've been to a lot of farmer's markets in my time in different areas, but this experience truly was a pleasant surprise. There is a sea of stands, some boasting anywhere form freshly picked seasoned fruits and vegetables, to shellfish, organic meat, beautiful arrays of flowers, freshly baked breads and pastries, and even trinkets! Some sellers have products you wouldn't find in most grocery stores, and the best part about the hole venture, the prices are a steal!

I went in with a limiting $20, knowing I always go overboard if I allow any more! I walked away with enough produce to last a couple weeks! I had to hold back some resistance when I got to the flowers and homemade essential oils!

Not only is the market a great place to buy quality foods at bargain prices, it's also is a family friendly environment, with live music playing and excited crowds. If fresh products doesn't get you excited enough, the dollars saved will!
